Mulege Mexico is a small corner of Baja California Sur that awaits you, full of charm and peace.

With the deep blue sea as a witness, exuberant beaches, and various tourist activities, I invite you to stay tuned and know all about Mulege with this complete guide.

In 1704, Jesuit friars arrived by accident at the present site of Mulege and, in 1705, founded the first Hispanic settlement, the Mission of Santa Rosalía de Mulege.

On October 2, 1847, the Mexican army covered itself with glory in Mulege, dealing a hard and unexpected blow to the American troops during the American War of Intervention.

One hundred heroic patriots led by Captain Manuel Pineda fought the so-called Battle of Mulege, which resulted in an unexpected victory for the Mexicans, pushing back the American ranks.

To this day, this confrontation is commemorated with pride and joy.

Heroica Mulegé (official name) is a town in the state of Baja California Sur, in front of the Sea of Cortez, belonging to the municipality of Mulege, which has the city of Santa Rosalía as its capital.

The best-known geographical reference of the place is the Mulege River, at the mouth of which the town is located.

The most practical way to reach Mulege is from La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, which can be reached by air from different cities in the country.

Once in the state capital, you can embark on a fun 480 km trip along with the Transpeninsular Highway Mexico 1.

I highly recommend renting a car. It’s cheaper and allows you to move at your own pace and stop at different awesome places along the way.

What is the weather like in Mulege Mexico?

The prevailing climate in Baja California Sur is dry, and Mulege is no exception, all thanks to the desert surrounding the town.

However, the climate in Mulege is a little more varied due to the mountain range that runs through the town and provides a somewhat different atmosphere.

It hardly rains at all, and the meager 82 mm of the annual rainfall is more or less evenly between June and March.

The average annual temperature in Mulege is 23 °C, with January being the coolest month at 16 °C and July and August being the warmest at 31 °C.

Extremes can reach nine °C on winter nights and 39 °C on hot summer days.

Undoubtedly the main attraction of Mulege is called Bahía Concepción, with spectacular beaches that have nothing to envy the best in the world.

The bay’s waters are calm and pleasantly cool and invite you to relax in this earthly paradise.

Beaches like Requesón or Santispac are the most visited by tourists worldwide in search of quiet and beautiful spaces.

But not everything is absolutely quiet in Bahía Concepción; in some places of the bay, you will find fun and adventurous activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, and camping.

Requeson Beach

This hidden treasure of Baja California Sur is a desert beach located in Bahía Concepción.

Its calm waters invite you to practice various water activities, such as swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, or relaxing on its fine white sand.

In front of Requesón, an island can be reached on foot, and even when the tide is low, you can see a strip of sand that directly connects the beach with the small island.

During the holiday season, camping is common on the beach, which has as its main attraction the nightly showers of stars that, reflected in the calm sea, offer an incredible and beautiful experience.

Santispac Beach

One of the most popular beaches in Bahía Concepción is Playa Santispac.

The beautiful panoramic view of the Sea of Cortez is one of the main attractions that can be seen from the Transpeninsular Highway 1 when you are about to arrive at the place.

Playa Santispac is located between two hills and is surrounded by a desert environment. It is also home to a creek that flows into an estuary, a refuge for various wildlife species.

This beach is also ideal for water sports and camping under the stars.

What other beaches can I visit in Mulege?

Bahía Concepción is long, and many beaches parade along the Baja coast, some quieter than others, but all of them beautiful.

  • Playa Los Naranjos is an almost virgin place, with some cabins integrated into the environment with essential services of fresh water and electricity
  • Playa Los Cocos is quiet and has some thatched huts to shelter from the hot sun
  • El Burro is another well-known beach where you can also practice various water sports; you can also go by boat to places where clams are extracted

As you can see, the hard part is choosing which beach to go to. I hope you enjoy them all!

In 1705, Jesuit Father Juan Manuel Basaldúa founded the Santa Rosalía de Mulegé Mission and was in charge of the compound for a year, giving way to other missionary fathers until construction was completed in 1766.

By then, Father Francisco Escalante was in charge of the place. In 1828 the mission was abandoned due to the reduction of its population.

With the tourism boom in Baja California, the mission was restored, with an 18th-century altar with the statue of Santa Rosalia carried initially inside.
